FSVP requires importers to verify that their foreign suppliers of food for human and animal consumption meet applicable FDA safety standards. More specifically, FSVP requires that importers verify that their suppliers are producing food using processes and procedures that offer the same level of public health protection as the preventive controls (PC) requirements in the preventive controls and current good manufacturing practices rules for human food and animal food and produce safety FSMA rules, and that the food is not adulterated and properly labeled with respect to allergens.
This course will provide participants with the knowledge to implement the requirements of the “Foreign Supplier Verification Programs (FSVP) for Importers of Food for Humans and Animals” regulation of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This regulation is one of a number of regulations and guidance that implement the provisions of the 2011 Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA), which focuses on safe food practices. This course is designed for:
The FSVP curriculum was designed by regulatory, academia, and industry professionals and developed with funding from FDA as part of the FSPCA. In contrast to the Preventive Controls (PC) rules, the FSVP rule does not require you to attend a training program following a “standardized curriculum” recognized by FDA. Attending this course, however, will help you understand the FSVP requirements and how those requirements can be met in your particular circumstance.
Note: We recommend taking the Preventive Controls for Animal Food Course prior to the Foreign Supplier Verification Program Course.
These courses are best for participants that are new to FSMA or food safety regulations or those that are not comfortable using computer technology to learn. The class runs for 1.5 days (12 hours) and includes direct instruction, small group work, and individual reflection. Current offerings are limited.
This version of the course brings together the best of both worlds. Part 1 is completed individually online and Part 2 is complete in a live webinar with an expert instructor and other participants. Part 1 is run by FSPCA and you must register separately. Once you have completed Part 1, you have six months to complete the in-person Part 2 of the course- this is the part we offer. Part 2 is conducted in two 4-hour sessions over two days (8 hours total), in which we will review the material from the online course and work in small groups to practice the skills necessary for implementing the Foreign Supplier Verification Program.
This course is delivered completely online in a synchronous, webinar format. The 12 hour time commitment is split into 3, 4-hour half-day webinars. A combination of direct instruction, small group work, and individual reflection are used. Please check specific software/hardware requirements before registering.
